This year, the lake began filling with water in May, thanks to heavy rainfall in Queensland during late summer and autumn. Specifically, March saw record-breaking downpours in the Lake Eyre Basin.
Now, here's a key point: Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre is an ephemeral lake. This means it's usually dry, only filling after significant rainfall in its basin – a massive area spanning approximately 1.2 million square kilometers across parts of four Australian states and territories.
The heavy rains this year brought a deluge of water. But because Lake Eyre is endorheic – a closed drainage basin with no outlet – the water has been slowly evaporating over the past six to seven months. And this is where the magic happens.
As the water evaporates, the salinity of the lake increases. This high concentration of brine creates the perfect environment for certain bacteria and algae to thrive. These organisms produce pigments that turn the water a vibrant pink hue.
Due to its immense size, the pink waters of Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre are easily visible from space. Satellites like Himawari-9, orbiting about 36,000 km above Earth, capture stunning images of this unique event.
