A familiar face is returning to Stanford—but this time, he’s calling the shots. According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Stanford University is set to name Tavita Pritchard as its new head football coach. The move marks a full-circle moment for Pritchard, who spent more than a decade coaching at Stanford from 2010 to 2022 before moving on to the NFL. He now replaces interim coach Frank Reich, whose team has struggled this season with a 4–7 record.
Pritchard currently serves as the quarterbacks coach for the Washington Commanders, a position he’s held since 2023. Before stepping into the NFL, his entire coaching journey unfolded at his alma mater. Over twelve years at Stanford, Pritchard wore many hats—graduate assistant, defensive assistant, running backs coach, quarterbacks coach, receivers coach, and ultimately offensive coordinator. That versatility gave him a rare, top-to-bottom understanding of how the Cardinal program operates.
But here’s where the story takes an interesting twist. Pritchard once led Stanford’s offense himself—not from the sidelines, but on the field. As the team’s starting quarterback in 2007, he famously orchestrated one of the biggest upsets in college football history: Stanford’s 24–23 win over No. 1 USC, despite being 41-point underdogs. Ironically, just a couple of years later, he lost his starting role to none other than Andrew Luck—now the program’s general manager.
After going undrafted in 2010, Pritchard had a brief tryout with the San Francisco 49ers. When that didn’t pan out, he immediately turned to coaching, starting as a volunteer assistant at Stanford that same year. In hindsight, that decision may have been the spark that led him right back to where it all began—this time as head coach.
And this is the part most people miss: Andrew Luck is quietly becoming one of the most influential figures in Stanford football today. As general manager, he’s responsible for guiding the program into a new era—one that’s far different from when he was under center himself. Bringing Pritchard back is his first major move, a clear statement about rebuilding from within and trusting the Stanford DNA.
Luck spoke recently with Eli Manning on Eli’s Places, reflecting on how profoundly college football has changed. “So much has shifted,” Luck said. “It’s wild how quickly the game’s financial side has expanded. Players are the product on the field—they deserve a fair piece of that.” He emphasized that while the landscape now includes NIL deals and significant commercial influence, the spirit of college football can still thrive if those changes are handled responsibly.
Under Luck’s leadership, Stanford is embracing this transition rather than resisting it. He insists the program must stay competitive on every front, including NIL opportunities, while preserving what makes college football special—its sense of community, tradition, and pride in the student-athlete experience.
