St. Bonaventure's rugby team, the Bonnies, delivered a commanding performance to claim the national title, leaving Queens University in their wake with a stunning 55-19 victory.
In a rematch of the 2021 nail-biter against Penn State, where the Bonnies scraped by with a 19-18 win, this time they left no room for doubt. The team's determination and skill were on full display as they secured their second men's National Collegiate Rugby Division I Championship.
The Bonnies, having reached the national title game three times in the last five seasons, were not to be denied. Despite a previous loss to Queens in the Atlantic Rugby Conference title game, they seized control early on, leading 24-7 at halftime and never relinquishing their dominance.
Coach Danny Neighbour, reflecting on the team's journey, said, "It's a testament to the team's resilience and growth. That loss in the 2023 title game fueled our fire, and now we're here, champions again." He praised the entire support staff, emphasizing the collective effort that led to this triumph.
But here's where it gets interesting: since their last encounter with Queens, the Bonnies have been on a tear, outscoring opponents 202-51. This includes a 44-17 play-in victory over Southern Nazarene, a 51-7 quarterfinal win against defending champions Brown, and a 33-8 semifinal defeat of Walsh University.
Tournament MVP Troy Heroldt was a standout, scoring three times, including a breathtaking 40-yard dash through the Queens defense. Heroldt's modesty shone through as he credited his teammates for their success, setting their sights on defending the title next year.
The Bonnies' early dominance was evident as Reynard Boshoff crossed the try line just 5 minutes in, with Noah Edwards converting the first of his seven successful conversions. Edwards' penalty kick extended the lead to 10-0, setting the tone for the rest of the game.
Tanya Takaendisa's try, resulting from a 70-yard clearing kick by Manu Taula, put the Bonnies up 17-0. In the second half, Eddie Nelson's 50-yard sprint showcased their relentless attack, extending the lead to 31-7.
Heroldt's additional scores and Mike Sears' try sealed the deal, with Edwards' penalty kick bringing his personal tally to 20 points.
Edwards, overwhelmed with emotion, attributed the team's success to Coach Neighbour and the entire coaching staff, emphasizing that this victory belonged to the entire program.
