In the early 1980s, a young Shaun Tan found himself in the unassuming suburb of Hillarys, a place he describes as a "nowhere sort of place" at the time. His parents, with little community connection, embarked on building a home in an unfamiliar neighborhood.

He has authored and illustrated an impressive 14 books, with one of his titles, "The Lost Thing," even winning him an Oscar award. Now, another of his beloved books, "Tales from Outer Suburbia," has been adapted into an animated series, bringing his unique vision to life.
The Magic in the Mundane
"Tales from Outer Suburbia" is a collection of stories directly inspired by Tan's childhood experiences in the suburbs. It's a world where the bizarre and the everyday coexist seamlessly. Deep sea divers stroll to the corner store, a tiny visitor takes up residence in the crockery cupboard, and goldfish become celestial beings.
But here's where it gets controversial... Tan argues that his work is not fantasy, but rather a celebration of the surreal. He believes that the strange and arbitrary nature of our everyday lives is what makes them magical.
"The way we behave, the things we eat, the vehicles we operate—they're all strange and have a complicated history. It's about tapping into that strangeness and making it special."
A Sense of Belonging and Displacement
Tan's work is often tinged with a sense of nostalgia and melancholy. He explores the theme of belonging and displacement, particularly as a half-Asian kid growing up in a predominantly white area.
"All my stories are about this question of belonging and this constant feeling of displacement. It's a personal journey, but I think it's something everyone can relate to on a deeper, existential level."
The Curiosity of Childhood, for All Ages
Despite being labeled as a children's author, Tan maintains that his work is for everyone. He creates child protagonists because they embody the curiosity and openness that adults often lose.
"My work aims to bridge the curiosity of childhood into adulthood. I see these as adult stories that use childhood memories to reinvigorate adult perception."
The Influence of Tim Winton
Tan's interest in writing about his suburban upbringing was inspired by fellow Perth writer, Tim Winton. Winton's ability to make the familiar landscape of Karrinyup, a neighboring suburb, feel important and romantic, resonated deeply with Tan.
"I realized you could write about the place where you grew up and make it as significant as any other location in the world."
A Universal Appeal
While Tan's stories are set in the familiar cul-de-sacs of the suburbs, he insists that his work is not an endorsement of suburban life. He encourages readers to find their own connections and interpretations, knowing that his stories will mean something different to everyone.
"I have my vision, but I'm aware that it becomes a very different thing in the mind of another reader. I've always encouraged that diversity of interpretation."
