Nipah Virus Outbreak: Airport Screenings Across Asia (2026)

Nipah Virus Outbreak in India Sparks Airport Screenings Across Asia

The recent outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus in India's West Bengal state has raised concerns across Asia, prompting airports in several countries to enhance screening measures. Thailand and Nepal have initiated passenger screenings at airports receiving flights from West Bengal, while Taiwan's health authorities have proposed classifying Nipah as a 'Category 5 disease', indicating its potential for severe public health risks.

The Nipah virus, which can be transmitted from animals like pigs and fruit bats to humans, and also spreads person-to-person through contaminated food, has a high mortality rate ranging from 40% to 75%. There is currently no vaccine or treatment available.

Symptoms of the virus can vary widely, or even be absent in some cases. Initial signs may include fever, headaches, muscle pain, vomiting, and sore throat, followed by drowsiness, altered consciousness, and pneumonia in severe cases. Encephalitis, a potentially fatal brain inflammation, can also occur.

Past outbreaks have been reported in Malaysia, Singapore, Bangladesh, and India. The first recognized outbreak in 1998 among pig farmers in Malaysia led to over 100 deaths and the culling of a million pigs. Bangladesh has seen over 100 Nipah-related deaths since 2001, while India has reported outbreaks in West Bengal in 2001 and 2007, and more recently in Kerala in 2018 and 2023.

The current outbreak in West Bengal has resulted in five confirmed cases, with two healthcare workers in critical condition. Approximately 110 people who were in contact with the infected have been quarantined. While no cases have been reported outside India, countries are taking precautionary measures.

Thailand's health authorities are implementing stricter screenings at three international airports in Bangkok and Phuket, while Nepal has begun screening arrivals at Kathmandu airport and other land border points with India. These measures aim to prevent the virus from spreading further and protect public health.
