Macy's to Close Cheshire Fulfillment Centers, Impacting Nearly 1,000 Workers
CHESHIRE, Conn. (WFSB) - A significant blow to the local workforce has been announced by Macy's, as the company plans to shut down its fulfillment centers in Cheshire, affecting approximately 1,000 employees. This decision, made public on Tuesday, will result in the closure of both locations situated on Knotter Drive and West Johnson Avenue.
According to a statement addressed to state and town officials, a small group of maintenance workers will remain employed until the spring of 2027 to assist in the closure process. However, the majority of employees are expected to be laid off later this year.
Eyewitness News has received a statement from the Cheshire Town Manager, revealing that the Macy's South Windsor distribution center also announced its closure for early 2026 in October of the previous year. The layoffs encompass a range of roles, including 77 warehouse associates, 8 power equipment operators, and 4 warehouse leads, among others.
The letter further specifies that job eliminations took place between December 28, 2025, and January 10, 2026. In a statement to Channel 3, Macy's emphasized its commitment to streamlining and modernizing its supply chain to enhance customer service and operational efficiency.
The company plans to centralize Backstage operations at its dedicated off-price facility in Columbus, Ohio, while other operations at South Windsor will continue. Macy's assured its dedication to supporting its employees throughout this transition.
