The M50’s western section was completed in stages between 1990 and 2010, but the eastern side—which would’ve required a tunnel or bridge over Dublin Bay—never materialized. “Completing the ring could be a game-changer,” Reynolds-Feighan argues. But this isn’t just about infrastructure—it’s about people. Since 2010, Dublin’s population has surged by 17%, and a booming economy has driven up traffic volumes. Add to that the housing crisis, which forces more people to commute from surrounding counties, and you’ve got a perfect storm of congestion. And this is the part most people miss: higher tolls, like those set to hit the M50 and Dublin Port Tunnel in January, might ease traffic temporarily, but they don’t address the root cause.
