John Cena aimed to spotlight the sport’s future at his retirement show, and tonight’s Saturday Night’s Main Event at Capital One Arena in Washington D.C. saw WWE lean into its collaboration with TNA to help make that vision a reality.
In a calculated move to showcase rising talent, Leon Slater stepped away from independent bookings to team with NXT standout Je’Von Evans, who had just challenged for the NXT Championship a few days earlier. The duo faced off against WWE World Tag Team Champions AJ Styles and Dragon Lee.
The match moved at a blistering pace, delivering the kind of action fans crave. Styles and Lee sold aggressively for the newer stars, eliciting enthusiastic “this is awesome” chants from the live audience after Slater’s OG Cutter into a Swanton Bomb. The result was sealed when Lee kicked Evans into Slater as Slater attempted the pin on Styles.
A late misstep saw Styles trip on the ropes while aiming for the Phenomenal Forearm, but he recovered quickly and secured the victory with a Styles Clash on Slater.
Despite the stumble, the bout served as a strong platform to highlight the next generation of performers.
