Big news for Google Keep users! The way you manage your reminders is changing, and it's all about streamlining things with Google Tasks. But what does this mean for you? Let's dive in!
Following the announcement made last month, Google is slowly rolling out the integration of Keep reminders into Google Tasks.
As of now, this update is still in its early stages. The rollout is happening gradually, and it's not yet available to everyone. The company initially mentioned a release timeframe within the "second half of 2025," so hopefully, we'll all have it before the year's end. You'll know the update has arrived when you see a prompt that says, "Reminders are now Google Tasks" on your device.
So, what's actually changing? When you tap the bell icon in the top-right corner of a note, your reminder will now be saved in Google Tasks. You'll spot the familiar blue icon of Tasks at the top of your note. The options for setting reminders like "Tomorrow morning," "Tomorrow evening," "Next [week]," and the "Pick a date & time" with repeating intervals, remain unchanged.
Here's where it gets controversial... One significant change is the removal of location-based reminders like "Home," "Work," and "Pick a place." Google Tasks doesn't currently support location-based reminders. If you had location data in your Keep reminders, it will be moved to the task description.
After setting your reminders, you'll find them in both the Google Tasks app and your Google Calendar, marked with a "From Keep" label. Tapping on this badge will conveniently open the original note for quick access.
Google Keep will still have a "Reminders" page (in list or grid view) accessible from the navigation drawer. If you choose to delete a reminder within Keep, Google will ask if you want to remove both the task and the note, or just the note.
Important Note: The Google Keep app will no longer send you notifications for your reminders. Instead, those alerts will be handled by Calendar or Tasks. So, make sure you have those apps installed on your device to stay on top of your schedule.
You can edit the date and time of your reminders from Keep notes, Tasks, or Calendar. Any of these apps will also allow you to mark reminders as complete. And this is the part most people miss... Here's a small detail to be aware of: if you only change the title of the Keep note, the reminder's title won't automatically update. You'll need to edit the title within Tasks or Calendar to reflect any changes.
For the most part, this migration is pretty straightforward (aside from the location-based reminders). There are a few other small details to keep in mind:
- Task Limits: You can have up to 100,000 tasks. If you have more Keep reminders than this, the oldest ones might not migrate to Tasks.
- Long Reminders: If your Keep reminder is too long, its title will be shortened after it moves to Tasks.
- Pending Tasks: You can find a list of all "Pending tasks" from the last 365 days in the "All-day" section of your calendar for the current day.
- Repeating Tasks: If a task repeats more than every 1,000 days, weeks, months, or years, the recurrence schedule will be adjusted to once every 1,000 days, weeks, months, or years. For example, a task that repeats every 2,000 days is adjusted to every 1,000 days.
Older reminders that don't repeat and are older than a year will be added to an "Old Google Keep Reminders" list.
- Tasks Beyond the Year 3000: Any tasks with dates beyond the year 3000 are adjusted to the year 2900.
