The electric vehicle market in China is booming, and the race for the top spot is fierce! But in 2025, it was the Geely Galaxy Xingyue that stole the crown, leaving the once-dominant Wuling Hongguang Mini EV in its dust. And this is where it gets interesting: the Xingyue's success isn't just a flash in the pan.
Despite the Wuling's popularity, the Geely Galaxy Xingyue took the lead, selling an impressive 465,775 units in the Chinese retail market. This compact battery-electric vehicle offers an affordable price tag starting at 68,800 yuan (around 8,500 euros) and two battery options. The base model provides a range of 310 kilometers, while the upgraded battery boasts 410 kilometers, priced at 81,800 yuan (approximately 10,100 euros).
But here's where it gets controversial. The Xingyue's success might be attributed to a clever rebranding strategy. Previously known as the Geely Geometry Xingyue, the model was rebranded as the Geely Galaxy Xingyue after the Geometry subsidiary merged with Geely's premium brand. This move could have contributed to its sales surge.
The Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, despite its strong performance, settled for second place with 435,599 sales. Tesla's Model Y, manufactured locally in China, secured the third position with 425,337 units sold. Interestingly, Tesla's Model 3, also produced in China, ranked ninth, highlighting the dominance of locally produced vehicles in the Chinese market.
A notable trend: Chinese brands dominate the top 20 best-selling New Energy Vehicles (NEVs). BYD, the market leader, has an impressive nine models in the top 20, showcasing its diverse portfolio. However, BYD's model strategy is unique, offering similar vehicles under different labels and series, which may impact their individual rankings. For instance, the BYD Qin Plus and Qin L, despite their similarities, are considered separate models in sales statistics.
What's more, NEV startups are giving established brands a run for their money. Xiaomi's SU7 and SUV YU7 debuted strongly, with the former ranking seventh and the latter entering the top 20 directly. Xpeng, Li Auto, and Aito also made their mark with their respective models.
So, is the Geely Galaxy Xingyue's success a result of clever branding, or is there more to the story? And will BYD's unique model strategy continue to pay off? The Chinese EV market is full of surprises, and the battle for dominance is far from over!
