The conflict in Ukraine has taken a dramatic turn, with Britain stepping up its support by developing a new ballistic missile system. This bold move, dubbed 'Nightfall,' signals a significant escalation in the ongoing war. Let's delve into the details.
The British government has announced a competition to rapidly create ground-launched ballistic missiles. These missiles are designed to carry a 200kg (440lb) warhead and strike targets up to a range of over 500km (310 miles).
The UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD) highlights that the 'Nightfall' missiles will be launched from various vehicles, capable of firing multiple missiles in rapid succession and quickly withdrawing. This capability is intended to allow Ukrainian forces to strike crucial military targets before Russia can react.
Three industry teams will each receive £9 million to design, develop, and deliver their first three Nightfall missiles within 12 months for test firings. Ukraine currently relies on the US for its ballistic missiles, such as the Atacms, and also has its self-developed Sapsan.
But here's where it gets controversial... Russia has again launched attacks on Kyiv, sparking fires in several districts. Ukrainian air defenses were actively engaged against incoming targets. These renewed attacks come as over 1,000 apartment buildings in Kyiv remain without heating due to a Russian bombardment. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that the situation remains extremely difficult, particularly in border regions, despite ongoing repair efforts.
Meanwhile, Pope Leo has offered prayers for the people of Ukraine, highlighting the particularly serious strikes on energy infrastructure. He emphasized that these strikes are severely impacting the civilian population, especially as the cold weather worsens.
On a different front, Ukrainian forces targeted three drilling platforms operated by the Russian oil company Lukoil in the Caspian Sea. These strikes aim to deprive Moscow of oil export revenue used to fund the war. Simultaneously, Moscow reported a Ukrainian drone strike that resulted in one fatality and three injuries in the Russian city of Voronezh.
