Bold statement: Sometimes the team’s strength flips expectations, and Auburn’s pitching stole the spotlight in a 2-1 season-opening win over Youngstown State. While everyone teased this Auburn lineup as an offense-first squad, Friday night proved a different truth: superb pitching can carry a game just as surely as timely hitting. Jake Marciano, aided by Drew Whalen and Garrett Brewer, combined to scatter two hits and rack up 17 strikeouts, delivering a victory that surprised even the home crowd.
Head coach Butch Thompson welcomed the trio’s dominant showing, calling it a crucial confidence booster for the Tigers. “We needed three guys to throw well tonight, and we got that,” he said. “It gave us a chance to win a ballgame. Their success here already is huge for us and can translate into momentum.”
Youngstown State’s Braden Gebhardt offered a strong counterpoint, giving up one run on two hits over six innings and fanning 11 Auburn hitters. But Auburn’s offense found a clutch moment when junior shortstop Eric Guevara delivered two of the team’s five hits, including a decisive two-bagger in the bottom of the eighth that set up the winning run. Guevara’s double energized Auburn after an underwhelming stretch by the offense, a note Thompson acknowledged with a touch of surprise.
“I don’t think it was a fluke,” Thompson remarked. “We chased fastballs up early, then Gebhardt added a slide step that kept us off balance. He started landing breaking balls for strikes and we started swinging at the wrong pitches. I hadn’t seen that combination before, honestly.”
Marciano’s first Auburn appearance went off nearly perfectly. The Virginia Tech transfer went five innings, allowing just two hits and striking out 12—a total that marked the most by an Auburn pitcher since Tanner Burns recorded 15 against Cincinnati on March 1, 2019. Whalen did not allow a hit but issued three walks and hit a batter, the lone blemishes in an otherwise sterling relief stint. Brewer closed it out in the ninth, securing the win with a 9-pitch save.
“It’s not about scoring runs alone,” Marciano commented. “We know we’ll swing the bat. What matters is staying competitive in low-scoring games, and tonight we did just that.”
The scoring began with Youngstown State’s solo homer in the fourth, its only lead of the night. Auburn answered in the next frame when Chris Rembert singled with two outs to score true freshman Ethin Bingaman from second, after Bingaman had reached on an error. The game’s decisive moment arrived in the eighth: Guevara’s double started the rally, Chase Fralick followed with a single, and a misplay in right field allowed Guevara to dash home with the eventual game-winner.
With four strong innings from Whalen in relief, Auburn briefly considered keeping him in for the ninth. The plan shifted when a walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, prompting Brewer to enter. A strikeout sequence and a routine fly ball to center sealed the win for Auburn, extending Whalen’s misstep-free stretch and completing Brewer’s strong closing act.
Brewer reflected on the moment: “Every situation is similar—throw strikes, get outs. It was a great team win. Jake got us there, Whalen set us up, and I was ready to finish it.”
Looking ahead, Auburn will continue the series at 6 p.m. on Saturday; the matchup will be available on SEC Network+.
